SEOUL, Feb. 27 (Korea Bizwire)The leadership of major law firm Daeryook & AJU (DR&AJU) and AI specialist firm Intellicon Meta Lab agreed on February 27 to a deal for artificial intelligence powered technology that will provide assistance to lawyers.

DR&AJU is a top ten-ranked South Korean law firm, while Intellicon Meta Lab is the creator of “U-Lex” and “Law Bo”, technological tools applicable in the legal sector.

Law Bo is a chatbot that can understand questions asked in natural language and deliver the laws and judicial precedents relevant to the initial inquiry. The program has been named a winner for two-years running at the Competition on Legal Information Extraction/Entailment (COLIEE).

DR&AJU will incorporate U-Lex, a legal data search engine, into its internal operations through the deal with Intellicon Meta Lab.

U-Lex’s functionality can be explained by the following example: a lawyer inputs the question “what happens when a person snaps a photo of a woman’s legs who is walking on the street” and U-Lex finds and arranges the relevant laws and precedents in order of importance.

DR&AJU lawyer Kim Hyeong-woo welcomed the technology, saying U-Lex will improve time efficiency as well as accuracy, not to mention increase productivity and drastically lower fees for legal services.

Down the line DR&AJU expects to place Law Bo on the front line and have the chatbot provide services to clients directly.

Referred to as “LegalTech”, the marriage of artificial intelligence and legal work is continuing to be carried out overseas. Besides law firms, the legal sphere as a whole are looking to utilize the technological edge.
