SEOUL, May 19 (Korea Bizwire)The Airport Railroad Corp. (ARC), the operator of the commuter rail line Airport Railroad Express (AREX), said Monday it has increased the stopping time of AREX trains, which operate between Incheon International Airport and Seoul Station, at some stations to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Accordingly, the AREX train now stops at Gyeyang Station and Unseo Station, which are the entrance points of the underground section, for about 20 seconds longer than the usual 30 seconds.

The ARC decided to implement the idea after recent internal discussions suggested that the period of time that the doors remained open should be increased to allow the air inside the train to circulate with the outside.

Until now, the company has refrained from operating fans to prevent internal air from circulating when trains operate to limit the spread of COVID-19.

However, as temperatures rise in the summer, air conditioning is inevitable, increasing the need for outside ventilation.

“We will operate the train the same as before by adjusting the speed of the train so that there will be no inconvenience for customers to use it,” an ARC official said.
