SEOUL, Aug. 25 (Korea Bizwire) – hanok village will be created in the eastern coastal city of Gangneung by October, next year, to promote the beauty of traditional Korean dwellings to foreign and local tourists, the government said Thursday.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said it will construct a “hanok experience complex” composed of 12 buildings where visitors can experience a hanok firsthand. The complex will cover 15,237 square meters and will be built in the vicinity of the Ojukheon House, a major tourist destination in Gangneung.

A total of 5.1 billion won (US$4.55 million) will be allocated for the joint project with the Gangneung city government, according to the ministry.

The Ojukheon house is where Shin Saimdang, the 16th-century painter and poet who is perhaps the most famous mother in Korean history, lived and gave birth to the celebrated Confucian scholar Yulgok.

The village will also be equipped with supplementary facilities where visitors can learn tea etiquette, experience “seodang,” traditional village school and folk games as well as enjoy performances of traditional Korean music.

“We plan to use the ‘Gangneung hanok experience complex’ as a place for letting foreign and local tourists learn about the beauty and creativity of hanok especially during the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics,” a ministry official said on condition of anonymity.

Gangneung, located 237 kilometers east of Seoul, is one of the three venues of the Olympics along with PyeongChang and Jeongseon.
