SUWON, Nov. 13 (Korea Bizwire) — Self-driving cars and human drivers are expected to go head to head at the upcoming Pangyo Autonomous Motor Show 2017.
A much-anticipated question among car fans will be answered later this week at the Pangyo show, as autonomous cars and human drivers will show off their driving skills to decide who is the better driver, according to the Gyeonggi Provincial Government.
During the match, which is scheduled to take place on Friday at Pangyo Zero City in Seongnam, two-seater vehicles, one drive by a human and another by an automated driving system, will run on a 700-meter course filled with obstacles and missions including observing a speed limit, U-turns, and avoiding falling objects.
Judges will assess the driving skills of both vehicles based on how quickly they arrive at the destination and how well they complete each mission.
According to the event’s governing body, candidates for the driving match will include a group of 10 drivers of different backgrounds, genders and driving experience who will run up against autonomous cars, ranging from inexperienced male and female drivers and seniors to professional high-skilled drivers.
In the meantime, a carefully selected autonomous car chosen between an award-winning team and a research institution will participate in the match.
“The match between an autonomous car and a human driver could be seen as the automobile equivalent of Alpha Go, which we expect to present a great experience to the motor show attendees and raise public interest in self-driving vehicles,” said Lee Jong-don, a local government official.
In addition to the autonomous car versus human match, the motor show is expected to welcome visitors with a variety of events, including an international autonomous car forum and a university student competition.

Pangyo Zero City, the venue for the Pangyo Autonomous Motor Show, is Gyeonggi Province’s core environmental and industrial project, built as an urban high-tech industrial complex with the goal of minimizing regulations, environmental pollution, carbon emissions and accidents.
The Gyeonggi government is currently planning to build urban type test beds where autonomous cars can be tested at Pangyo Zero City.
