BUSAN, April 24 (Korea Bizwire) — Busan, South Korea’s second-largest city, is set to make the nation’s first attempt to measure the density of pollutants in the atmosphere by installing sensors on city buses.
The Busan metropolitan government said Sunday that mobile atmospheric control systems have been installed on 54 city buses, and a pilot project has been launched.
As these buses travel throughout the city, they measure the density of fine dust, volatile organic compounds, and nitrogen oxides in real-time and transmit the data to a central server, contributing to the creation of an atmospheric environment map.
Starting from September, the data will be displayed on LCD monitors within the buses and will also be available through the city government’s website and smartphone applications.
Moreover, the city government plans to equip buses with sensors to measure the density of fine dust inside the vehicles themselves.
This data will be used to determine the replacement cycle for air purifier filters installed to improve indoor air quality.
