SEOUL, June 21 (Korea Bizwire)Dongguk University, located at the foot of Seoul’s Mount Nam, offers scholarships found nowhere else in the country – cat mom scholarships.

The scholarship disburses living stipends for underprivileged students, and was first introduced this year to help 10 students.

The scholarship was created through donations from Dr. Song Su-kyeong, whose connection with the school began as she took care of local stray cats.

For four or five years, Song has been taking care of stray cats living around Mount Nam, eventually feeding those on the school campus as well. She currently takes care of 40 to 50 cats in the area.

Spending almost half of her salary on cats each month, Song said she was inclined to take care of the cats not because she likes the cats per se, but because of their suffering caused by the cruelty of human beings.

“I’ve always felt sorry for animals abused by people, but there was nothing I could do except to feed them,” Song said.
