SEOUL, July 10 (Korea Bizwire)Controversy is looming over the efforts of local governments to hold ‘matchmaking’ events as a solution to the pervasive low birthrate.

The Saha District in Busan announced on Sunday that it will host a matchmaking event next year to address the low marriage and birthrate problems.

Similarly, the municipality of Seongnam in Gyeonggi Province held a matchmaking event last week, and the Seoul Metropolitan Government is also contemplating organizing a similar event.

Local authorities believe that these events will provide more opportunities for individuals to meet potential partners.

For instance, a matchmaking event hosted in Seongnam resulted in 15 couples among 100 participants.

“Marriage is a decision that affects a lifetime. That’s why it is important to meet a wide range of people,” said a 20-year-old office worker surnamed Choo.

Opponents question the appropriateness of local authorities spending tax revenues to interfere in people’s personal relationships.

“If there are individuals who desire to meet a significant other but lack the time, they can consult a reputable matchmaking agency,” said Jung Jae-hoon, a social welfare professor at Seoul Women’s University.

“The greatest obstacles for individuals considering marriage and parenthood are social problems such as unemployment,” said a 30-year-old woman contemplating pregnancy.
