CHEORWON, March 10 (Korea Bizwire) — The coronavirus outbreak is altering the landscape of military enlistment for young South Korean men.
On Monday afternoon, an army camp at the 6th Infantry Division in Cheorwon County, Gangwon Province was full of cars bringing in new recruits.
Unlike previous times, friends, family and loved ones left the area as soon as they dropped off the new recruits.
The Ministry of Defense recently decided to cancel or minimize all enlistment ceremonies and restrict entry of all non-military personnel to prevent transmission of the coronavirus.
The 6th Infantry Division decided to follow in the footsteps of drive-through testing centers and allow vehicles to drop off new recruits without parking.
Some parents circled around the area in their cars to see off their sons go off to start their military service.
