SEJONG, South Korea, Aug 26 (Korea Bizwire) –  The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport unveiled a modern-styled ‘Model Hanok’ at 2 pm on Friday, August 23. The new hanok, or Korean traditional house, is cost-efficient at only about 60 percent of conventional construction costs and more comfortable than the traditional hanok.

While interest in traditional Korean housing has increased in recent years, the public has been also reluctant to build or buy these traditional homes due to perception that a hanok is cold and uncomfortable, not to mention  two to three times more expensive to build compared to regular houses.

The ministry has worked on the hanok project since 2009 to address these issues by researching ways to reduce building costs, reflect and accommodate modern life styles, and enhance important housing aspects such as insulation, and the ‘Model Hanok’ is the culmination of these efforts. The ministry announced that it would share these research outcomes with the public, while continuing its effort to provide people with a more cost-efficient and comfortable hanok.
