DAEGU, South Korea, July 2 (Korea Bizwire) – Despite sweltering heat topping 36 degrees Celsius (97°F), thousands gathered Tuesday evening in Daegu’s Duryu Park for the opening of the 13th Chimaek Festival — an annual celebration of South Korea’s beloved pairing of chicken and beer.
Cooling mist systems and water trucks were deployed throughout the festival grounds to combat the heat, while shaded areas and heatwave safety guides were prominently posted. As the sun began to set, the festival buzzed with energy, and the crowds quickly filled tables around the main stage.
With fried chicken sizzling nonstop and beer flowing freely, vendors worked tirelessly under the blazing heat, their sweat-drenched faces nonetheless lit with smiles. “It’s our first time here, and we’re really excited,” said Jeon Young-woong, 34, who runs a chicken booth. “This is Daegu’s biggest festival, and we hope to make our brand known.”
Attendees embraced the festive chaos. Some set up picnic mats under trees, enjoying their food and drinks to the sound of live music blasting from the main stage in 2·28 Freedom Square. “This is my second time here, and while it’s really hot, the water-spraying devices make it more bearable,” said 22-year-old Kim Min-jae.

At the opening of the 13th Daegu Chimaek Festival held on July 2 in Duryu Park, Dalseo District, Daegu, a staff member from a participating company receives emergency treatment from a 119 paramedic on site after experiencing dehydration and dizziness due to the heat.
The official opening ceremony began at 7:30 p.m., featuring a synchronized lighting of oversized “Chimaek cheering sticks,” laser shows, and a dramatic fountain performance. This year’s theme, “Chimaek Sensation,” is reflected in the festival’s expanded layout of three zones and four thematic areas.
Highlights include a “Water Concert” with electronic music and water cannons at the main square, a horror-themed “Chimaek the Club” DJ party in the park’s second lot, and an indoor “Egg Dome” experience at the Kolon Outdoor Music Hall for those seeking a cooler way to enjoy their chicken and beer.
A total of 253 vendor booths are operating at this year’s festival, which runs through July 6.
