SEOUL, Korea, Sep 17 (Korea Bizwire) – More than a half of Koreans are in favor of a proposal to raise the cigarette price by 2,000 won. According to Gallup Korea data on September 16 based on a survey on 1,211 adults asking about their attitude toward smoking and smokers, 52 percent of respondents said they are in support of a bill to hike the price of a pack of cigarettes to 4,500 won from current 2,500 won.
But smokers were not so enamored of the idea, with only 24 percent supporting the proposition while 70 percent of them are in opposition. Men, of whom there are more smokers than women, tend to be split on the issue, with 45 percent in favor and 47 percent in opposition.
To a question whether you would keep smoking even after the cigarette price goes up to 4,500 won, 47 percent out of 283 smoker respondents said, “I would keep smoking no matter what,” as opposed to 39 percent saying, “I would quit.” Even to a question whether you insist on smoking when the price goes up to 10,000 won, 33 percent said they would remain die-hard smokers. According to the survey, the average number of cigarettes a smoker burns up a day was 18.
