SEOUL, Oct. 25 (Korea Bizwire) –More than half of animal deaths at Seoul Children’s Grand Park over the past five years have been due to diseases or accidents, a Seoul city councilor said Wednesday, calling for reinforcing animal care and management by the zoo authorities.
Councilor Lee Kyung-suk, citing data from Seoul Facilities Corp., said 177 animals died at the zoo between 2018 and May this year, and 96 of them, or 54.2 percent, died of diseases or accidents.
There were 69 deaths from diseases and 27 deaths from accidents, Lee said, noting only 81 animals, or 45.8 percent, died naturally.
She also said that 76, or 42.9 percent, of the animals that died of diseases or accidents at the zoo were internationally endangered species.
“Endangered animals that should be protected are actually dying from diseases at the zoo,” Lee said, urging it to improve its animal care and management efforts.
