SEOUL, Oct. 8 (Korea Bizwire) – As the government has started recruitment for demonstration businesses using drones, many companies have expressed interest in participating. A total of 41 companies showed interest, including Korean Air, CJ Korea Express and Hyundai Logistics.
According to the Korea Institute of Aviation Safety Technology, in addition to Korean Air, parcel delivery services, image recording companies, companies related to agriculture, and safety agencies applied. As well, 11 local governments applied to provide air space where drones can fly.
With the use of drones, Korean Airlines hopes to transport goods, protect and look over wooden areas, check the safety of its facilities and enhance unmanned planes. CJ Korea Express and Hyundai Logistics are said to have applied to use the drones to transport goods.
As other countries such as the U.S. and Germany are currently supporting demonstration businesses, using drones to transport goods and medicine, Korea also intends to start demonstrations before the end of the year.
After consideration and evaluation, the Korea Institute of Aviation Safety Technology will choose five companies and five local governments to participate in the program. They will connect businesses and local governments, but will not offer funding.
Starting from December, the selected companies will verify the possibilities of the commercialization of drones for one or two years through the demonstration businesses.
The government will also develop regulations for night flights, high altitude flights and flying outside visible areas, through various tests.
