SEOUL, May 6 (Korea Bizwire) — The higher the age, income and educational level, the higher the probability that an individual would engage in eco-friendly activities, including energy-saving behaviors, a study showed Wednesday.
According to a thesis released by the state-run Korea Environment Institute, older people tend to have stronger interest in the environment and regard it as an important issue, with the frequency of practicing eco-friendly behaviors increasing along with an increase in age.
Women showed a higher frequency of practicing eco-friendly behaviors than men.
Educational levels and having children younger than 10 years of age showed a significant correlation with engagement in eco-friendly behaviors. Also found was a positive correlation between social class and the level of interest in the environment.
Age and income level did not appear to correlate directly with environmental consciousness (the degree to which one regards the environment as a significant issue and one’s attitude towards the environment).
However, those who were older and had higher incomes were more likely to participate in eco-friendly behaviors.
Educational attainment showed a statistically significant positive correlation with eco-friendly attitudes and behaviors.
The study was based on an analysis of the 2012 to 2017 data from the KEI’s annual national environmental consciousness survey (6,606 respondents in total).
