SEOUL, Dec. 17 (Korea Bizwire) Tough economic times are changing the culture of South Korean businesses, where calendars were typically offered for free to employees at the beginning of a new year.

Now, as employers are distributing fewer free calendars, more people are ordering calendars online.

Gmarket, South Korea’s biggest online shopping portal, said calendar sales during the last 30 days were 30 percent higher than the same period last year.

Sales of wall calendars, the most widely used type of calendars, rose by 29 percent during this period.

Living expenses calendars, designed to help manage everyday expenses and receipts, gained popularity, with sales up 93 percent compared to last year.

An increasing number of consumers are treating calendars as interior decorations. Do-it-yourself calendars, which can be customized by the consumer, rose 70 percent in sales, while sales of table calendars rose by 6 percent.

Sales of daily calendars also rose by 2 percent thanks to seniors and retro-style enthusiasts.

“More customers are buying calendars that suit the interior design of their homes,” said a source from Gmarket. “As such, calendars with practical features as well as beautiful designs are in high demand.”
