SEOUL, Aug. 26 (Korea Bizwire)A growing number of South Koreans are choosing to visit their family or friends rather than staying at hotels or resorts during their travels as the coronavirus pandemic continues to rage on.

Consumer Insight, a local market research firm, reported that ‘family or friend’s home’ comprised the largest share (22.7 percent) among various types of accommodation for the second quarter this year.

The accommodation rate at family or friend’s homes jumped by 4.2 percentage points compared to last year (18.5 percent).

The increase is the result of more travelers choosing to visit the homes of family or friends as their travelling destinations or means of accommodation during their travels, Consumer Insight explained.

On the other hand, hotels and resort pensions that used to show the highest accommodation rate during the pre-coronavirus era saw their share drop by 0.7 and 1.8 percentage points, respectively.

People were less prone to go on trips that required an overnight stay. The share of trips that included accommodation this year was 50.7 percent, down by 15.1 percentage points compared to last year (65.8 percent).
