SEOUL, Aug. 25 (Korea Bizwire) — The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said Thursday it has succeeded in massive captive propagation for endangered hawk-billed sea turtles.
Previously, efforts to propagate sea turtles in captivity were carried out in small cohorts ranging from two to 24 individuals.
However, in this particular case, the artificial incubation of 130 viable eggs out of a total of 469 laid eggs is currently in progress.
This marks the most extensive captive propagation effort for hawk-billed sea turtles in the country’s history.
These sea turtles, which have been bred in captivity, will receive protection and nurturing within an aquarium over the next few years.
A portion of these turtles will be gradually reintroduced into their natural habitat, commencing in 2024.
