SEOUL, March 1 (Korea Bizwire)The scenery of Korean national flags flying outside every home on March 1 Independence Movement Day is now a thing of the past.

A majority of newly built apartment complexes are choosing not to install flag poles on the exterior because it hurts the overall design of the building.

Schools and local authorities, too, have stopped encouraging citizens to display flags on March 1st.

“I don’t remember buying a flag recently. I don’t even feel the need to put one up,” a 26-year-old woman said.

As the culture of putting up flags continues to disappear, it is becoming more difficult for people to find places to buy flags.

“The national flag is more popular among foreigners than locals,” said Kwon Yeong-min, the owner of a souvenir shop in Insadong, central Seoul.
