SEOUL, Feb. 14 (Korea Bizwire)Wigs made with generous hair donations are giving hope to children suffering from cancer in South Korea.

The country has been seeing approximately 1,600 children diagnosed with cancer each year, most of whom suffer from hair loss during the course of chemotherapy. Antibiotic wigs, which are readily available, are too expensive for many families.

“My grandfather passed away because of gastric cancer, and my father was diagnosed with stage 3 gastric cancer six years ago,” said a 30-year-old man surnamed Choi who recently donated his hair.

“I know how painful it must be for children going through chemotherapy, so I decided to join others and donate my hair.”

Some 15,000 to 20,000 strands of hair are used to make a single wig for a child.

According to a local hair donation agency, hair must be at least 25 centimeters in length, in locks of more than 30 strands of hair, to be donated.
