SEOUL, May 4 (Korea Bizwire) — The government and local firms have come together to establish a recycling system that will enable the creation of new products using recycled materials obtained from scrapped electronic devices.
The Ministry of Environment on Wednesday signed an agreement with Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, other manufacturers, recycling companies, and non-profit organizations.
The goal of the agreement is to increase the production of high-quality recycled materials that are suitable for making electronic devices and to enhance the usage of recycled materials throughout the production process.
Last year, approximately 400,000 tons of electronic devices were scrapped, and recycling them could yield up to 120,000 tons of plastic.
Of these, 28,000 tons were used as recycled material for the production of new electronic devices, while the remaining 92,000 tons were mixed with low-quality recycled materials.
With this agreement, the ministry anticipates that the supply of recycled materials will increase to 80,000 tons, which will be sufficient to produce 3 million refrigerators.
