SEOUL, March 18 (Korea Bizwire) — Foreigners refusing to leave the country despite an eviction order will be forcibly deported, the justice ministry said Tuesday.
Forced eviction is the strongest administrative measure that involves deporting a foreigner for illegally entering the country or violating conditions of their stay.
“We plan to operate a designated overseas escort team to swiftly repatriate foreigners whose stay in the country is not desirable,” the ministry said in a press release.
The ministry noted there were cases of foreigners staying at detention facilities for a prolonged period due to their refusal to apply for a travel document, which is required in place of a passport during the repatriation process.
Last week, one such foreigner was forcibly deported after being issued a travel document through cooperation with their embassy and escorted by a South Korean public servant to their home country.
“As we face an era of 3 million foreigners residing in the country, we will pursue a sustainable immigration policy based on public consensus and actively enforce deportations for foreigners illegally staying in the country,” acting Justice Minister Kim Seok-woo said.
