SEOUL, Dec. 21 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korea has decided to allow public servants working for the central government or municipal governments to use laptops for work.
The nation’s public servants have been prohibited from using laptops for work thus far to prevent confidential administrative information from being leaked. At administrative offices, they were encouraged to use two desktop personal computers (PCs) instead.
According to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, the newly-introduced laptops will feature encoded storage space to prevent the violation of security regulations. The storage space will be available only if security authorization is completed.
Through connection to a wired work network or wireless Internet, the laptops will allow users to instantly access the work system using virtualization technology, enabling them to work as if they are at their office even when they are on business trips.
Since public servants will be able to use one laptop instead of two desktop PCs, the initiative will also contribute to reducing equipment purchase costs and electricity usage costs, while curtailing work that requires heavy printing.
