SEOUL, Sept. 23 (Korea Bizwire) — About half of subscribers to over-the-top (OTT) media intend to continue to subscribe if prices increase, a survey showed Thursday.
According to a poll conducted by the Korea Creative Content Agency of 3,000 streaming service users between 15 and 59 years of age across the country, the percentage of the respondents who said they would continue to use their existing OTT service even if subscription rates increase by 10 percent remained low at 51 percent.
At 38 percent, a significant share of the respondents said that they would shift to other streaming services, while 11 percent said that they would not subscribe to any services at all.
Half of those who use overseas streaming services such as YouTube and Netflix said they would continue to use them even if their subscription rates increase.
In contrast, when it comes to homegrown streamers like Wavve and Tving, the percentage of those who said they would shift to other services was similar to or higher than those who said they would continue to use their existing services.
In response to a question asking about the biggest inconvenience in the use of streaming services, 42.5 percent cited the burden of subscription rates, while 55 percent of the respondents said that they would watch advertising if such services were operated free of charge.
Among users, 86.3 percent shared their paid subscription accounts with family members or others, of which the share of those who shared such accounts with individuals other than family members was estimated at 52 percent.
