SEOUL, May 31 (Korea Bizwire)Hanwha Ocean Co., a shipbuilding and defense industry unit of South Korea’s Hanwha Group, said Friday it has partnered with three Canadian technology firms to enhance cooperation as part of its effort to bid for Canada’s maritime procurement project.

During Canada’s Global Defence & Security Trade Show in Ottawa, Hanwha Ocean signed a teaming agreement with CAE Inc. to cooperate in naval operations training, upgrading the existing memorandum of understanding (MOU) concluded at a Canadian defense forum last year, according to the Korean company.

At the same time, Hanwha Ocean signed separate MOUs with Curtiss-Wright Indal Technologies to work together on submarine technologies.

These agreements are part of Hanwha Ocean’s recent efforts to strengthen its presence in the Canadian maritime defense sector, as the Royal Canadian Navy seeks to replace its aging fleet of four Victoria-class submarines with newer models from international sources.

“The signing of this teaming agreement and MOUs will be an important step for Hanwha Ocean in expanding our technology in the Canadian submarine business and our cooperation network with local Canadian companies,” said Lee Yong-wook, vice president of Hanwha Ocean’s special ship business division.
