SEOUL, Jun. 20 (Korea Bizwire) — A high-definition (HD) map service, containing three-dimensional (3D) spatial information essential for driving autonomous vehicles, is expected to be developed for highways across the country in the second half of the year.
The government formed a “5G+ Strategic Committee” that is a government-private partnership and held its first meeting Wednesday to announce major plans for the second half of this year that call for such measures.
The HD-map is a 3D spatial information system that was built in advance so that self-driving cars can locate themselves and recognize road and traffic regulations.
When sensor information that is built into an autonomous vehicle and the HD-map service are combined, it is possible to run the car more safely and efficiently.
It is essential to establish precise guidance in order to implement Level 4 autonomy, which allows cars to drive themselves to their destination without driver intervention, out of 0 to 5 levels of self-driving car technology.
The government has decided to push for technology verification and pilot operation of self-driving shuttles at Gyeonggi Province’s Pangyo Zero City tech valley and Suseong District in Daegu.
