JEJU, Nov. 3 (Korea Bizwire) – A new variety of gold kiwifruit from Jeju Island, uniquely shaped like a heart, is making its way to consumers’ tables, the Jeju Agricultural Research and Extension Services announced on November 2.

Named ‘Heart Gold,’ this new brand represents a new cultivar called ‘Gamhwang,’ a hybrid of Hongshim and Okcheon varieties. The name was inspired by its heart-like shape and embodies the message of sharing warm feelings through Jeju’s produce.

The fruit boasts impressive characteristics that set it apart from conventional gold kiwis. After ripening, Heart Gold kiwis reach a sweetness level of 18-19 brix while maintaining a low acid content of 0.36%, resulting in a sweeter, less tart taste.

At an average weight of 148g, they are significantly larger than typical gold kiwi varieties that weigh between 70-100g, and display a distinctively flatter shape and deeper yellow color.

First cultivated in 2021, Jeju farmers harvested 39 tons in their initial year of production. This year, starting from October, they aim to produce approximately 200 tons.

The cultivation area has expanded significantly, growing from 9.8 hectares across 31 farms last year to 17.3 hectares across 52 farms this year. Jeju now accounts for 72.7% of Korea’s total Gamhwang cultivation area of 23.8 hectares.

The research institute has developed special heart-shaped packaging for premium fruits weighing between 130-180g, sold in 1kg units.

“Heart Gold is Jeju’s unique kiwi brand,” said Kim Bo-hwa, a researcher at the institute. “We will do our utmost to establish Jeju kiwis as a leading product in the national market.”
