SEOUL, Sep. 10 (Korea Bizwire) – During big holidays such as Chuseok, or Korean equivalent of Thanksgivingday, family reunions are central to the traditional Korean festivity: families and relatives all around the nation come together to share food and their stories.
However, this big holiday season also comes as a good-bye moment to a significant number of pets in South Korea. During the peak summer holiday season, particularly from July through August, the number of pet animals thrown away almost doubles compared to the previous months of May and June. And this trend goes on during Chuseok which comes usually right after summer vacation season.
Most abandoned animals are kept at related facilities run by cities and other organizations for 10 days till the owners will find out their “lovely children missing” and to claim their ownership. Unfortunately however, most of the abandoned dogs or cats are left alone with little chance to enjoy their “family reunion” time. As many as 100,000 animals per year are being abandoned and nearly half of the “companion of humans” are being killed — naturally or in mercy killing methods — in South Korea, according to local sources and reports.
It is reported that only one of ten abandoned pets in this way is being adopted by a new owner. Holiday seasons might bring in a feeling of uneasiness to most pet animals if this best friend of human being can realize “humanly convenient practice” as times advances.
