BARCELONA, Feb. 27 (Korea Bizwire) — Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei Technologies Inc. wants to expand investment in South Korea’s 5G infrastructure and services as it moves to strengthen its presence in the key market, a senior network official said Wednesday.
South Korean carrier LG Uplus used Huawei’s equipment for its 5G infrastructure and is set to launch its 5G commercial network next month.
LG Uplus and Huawei also demonstrated the ultra-HD video and virtual reality services based on 5G networks during MWC Barcelona, in which more than 2,400 leading companies displayed the latest technologies and gadgets.
“We are very excited and still communicating with other operators, and there’s a lot forthcoming workshops or handshakings,” said Zhun Huimi, Huawei’s 5G global vice president, said in a press briefing during the congress. “We have definitely more interest to support the local (Korean) operators to expand the telecommunications system.”
Zhun, the chief marketing officer of products and solutions at a wireless network product line, said Huawei’s 5G gear is safer than its 4G model, but its equipment is shunned in some markets over security concerns brought on by “political” motivations amid a trade war with the United States.
“If we go back to businesses, security in 5G is definitely a lot more safer than 4G. So we don’t think that we cannot handle the risk of the security,” Zhun said. “I think it’s about political (issue). But I’m not in a position to address political security.”
Her comment echoes Huawei’s Rotating Chairman Guo Ping’s testy remarks, which refuted Washington’s claim that its 5G kits pose security risks to the U.S.
“Huawei has not and will never plant backdoors. And we will never allow anyone else to do so in our equipment,” Ping said in a key note speech during MWC.
