The latest model, the upgraded version of the third-generation G80, which debuted in March 2020, is aimed at attracting customers away from BMW’s new 5 series sedan and Mercedes-Benz’s upcoming E-Class sedan in the Korean market.
In October, BMW launched its new 5 series sedan for the first time in Korea. Mercedes-Benz plans to bring the new E-Class sedan here next month amid a growing local appetite for high-end and performance models.
Following the local launch, Hyundai plans to introduce the upgraded G80 in global markets, such as the United States and the Middle East, in the first half of next year, a company official said.
The G80 comes with a 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine or a 3.5-liter turbo-petrol engine, with their starting prices at 59 million won (US$46,000) and 66 million won, respectively, the company said in a statement.
The two trim models with a sports package carry higher price tags of between 63 million won and 71 million won due to advanced driver-assistance technologies, it said.
Hyundai applied the Genesis brand’s design philosophy of Athletic Elegance with design upgrades, including the two-line crest grille and headlamps built with micro lens array (MLA) technology.
Safety features include parking collision-avoidance assist-reverse (PCA-R), front collision avoidance, blind-spot collision-avoidance assist and highway driving assist systems.
On the interior side, the 27-inch-wide organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display integrates the cluster and the audio-video-navigation screen in a horizontal layout and extends to the center fascia, enhancing its high-tech sensibility, the statement said.
Hyundai has sold an accumulated 400,000 G80 models in global markets since 2016. The first-generation model with the name Genesis, not G80, was launched in 2008.
The current Genesis lineup is composed of the G70, G80 and G90 sedans, as well as the G80 electrified version, the GV60 all-electric SUV model, and the GV70 and GV80 gasoline-powered SUVs.
