SEOUL, April 19 (Korea Bizwire) – Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea’s top automaker, said Tuesday that it has reached an agreement with Cisco Systems Inc., a U.S.-based networking leader to cooperate on the development of key technologies for connected cars, as part of efforts to stay ahead of global rivals in the car-of-tomorrow segment.

Under the deal reached during Cisco CEO Chuck Robbins’ meeting with Chung Eui-sun, vice chairman of Hyundai Motor, at the latter’s office in Seoul, Hyundai Motor and Cisco will work together to develop “in-vehicle network technology,” which controls data transmission inside a car.

Robbins was the first Cisco CEO to visit South Korea in seven years. He chose South Korea as his first Asian destination after taking office in July last year.

The in-vehicle network technology serves a key role in the development of connected cars equipped with all sorts of communication technology that aids in safe, quick and enjoyable driving.

Hyundai Motor has been seeking to become a global leader in connected and intelligent cars, which provide remote maintenance services and autonomous driving.

Robbins, meanwhile, also plans to hold a meeting with Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Kwon Oh-hyun during his visit in South Korea. The two companies are expected to discuss forging ties on the server and Internet-of-Things businesses.
