SEOUL, June 30 (Korea Bizwire)Hyundai Motor has joined hands with college students to beautify Seoul. The auto maker said on June 29 that it signed an agreement with the Association Student Ambassadors-Korea (ASA-K) and the Seoul Metropolitan City Government on the 27th at the City Hall in a bid to make the nation’s capital cleaner and more environmentally friendly.

At the signing ceremony, ASA-K chairman Kim Beom-seok (student at Seoul National University of Science and Technology), Seoul city government’s head of the green city initiative Oh Hae-young, and Hyundai Motor service business division head Kim Tae-seok were in attendance along with other 20 student ambassadors.

The city beautifying campaign will involve planting flowers and cleaning up unsightly places. The first spot chosen for the initiative was the underpass area near Namyoung Station in Seoul’s downtown. Even though the area is frequented by students from adjacent Sookmyung Women’s University and other high schools and middle schools, it has remained a dark and bleak place people have avoided walking by.

A hundred of volunteers from Hyundai Motor and ASA-K began working on the area from June 28 by placing flower pots, plating flowers in small patches of land, and drawing flower-themed paintings on the walls. The volunteers hoped their work could make the area a brighter and safer place to walk even at night.

A Hyundai Motor official who was at the signing ceremony said, “As this is a meaningful event, we want to make it successful and expand similar campaigns to other areas too.” Since the last year, the car maker has worked with the Association Student Ambassadors-Korea in environmental corporate social responsibility activities and mentoring programs.

In addition, it has been active in environment conservation programs such as creating a hiking trail in Mt. Yumyeong natural recreational forest and participating in a project to prevent desertification in the Inner Mongolian region in northern China.
