SEOUL, Oct. 28 (Korea Bizwire) – Hyundai Motor Co., South Korea’s top automaker, will build a welfare center in Vietnam by donating 600 million won (US$524,000) to a local fundraising agency, a company official said Friday, the latest in a series of global corporate social responsibility activities.

The center — to involve the remodeling of an unspecified public building by the first half of next year — is meant to provide support to Vietnamese women who plan to emigrate to South Korea for marriage, the official said.

The carmaker has asked the Vietnamese government to help it lease a public building in Can Tho, the biggest city in the Mekong Delta.

The official also said the center also plans to help Vietnamese women, who have returned after staying in South Korea, get back on their feet by offering education on startups and employment.

A total of 41,186 Vietnamese — 40,010 women and 1,176 men — legally reside in South Korea through marriage with Koreans as of the end of September, according to data compiled by the Justice Ministry. Vietnamese spouses account for 27 percent of the total population of foreign spouses in South Korea.

Hyundai Motor sold 26,319 vehicles in Vietnam last year, accounting for 13.9 percent market share in the Southeast Asian country.

Hyundai Motor has launched corporate social responsibility activities in a number of countries in recent years.
