SEOUL, May 25 (Korea Bizwire)Hyundai Motor Group has launched a string of pilot projects to ensure better prediction of an electric vehicle (EV)’s battery lifespan by creating digital twins of actual electric vehicles.

The group said Tuesday it has carried out a proof of concept for the development of an EV battery lifespan prediction and digital twin platform in collaboration with Microsoft Korea Co., the local unit of U.S. software giant Microsoft Corp.

Hyundai also implemented a project using Microsoft Azure cloud service-based digital twin platform as a battery performance management method.

The new platform is able to predict battery lifespan by applying a variety of driving data from the IONIQ 5 all-electric model into virtual twin EVs in a digital world.

The digital twin project uses artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and physical models to offer a comprehensive analysis of information, including charging, discharging, driving habits, parking, and driving environment for individual EVs.

The project helped to prove that this technology can predict EV lifespan more accurately compared to existing battery management systems that rely on the simple calculation of a battery’s performance to predict its lifespan.

Hyundai said that the digital twin technology proved to be more accurate by continuously recalculating and analyzing various factors based on actual vehicle driving history.
