SEOUL, Oct. 21 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korean arms maker Hyundai Rotem Co. on Wednesday held a ceremony to celebrate the first shipment of K2 tanks bound for Poland at its plant in Changwon, 400 kilometers south of Seoul.
The company signed a 4.499 trillion won (US$3.3 billion) deal with Poland’s state defense procurement agency in August to build 180 K2 tanks for the Polish military by December 2027.
The deal is part of the initial agreement signed with the Polish agency a month earlier to export a total of 1,000 K2 tanks.
But the European country decided to take delivery of tanks from South Korea in advance as part of efforts to replace its old tanks with new ones faster.
Following the first shipment of 10 tanks, the remaining tanks are scheduled to be delivered to Poland on a gradual basis by 2025.
After arrival in Poland, tanks will be put in service after going through an acceptance inspection.
