SEOUL, May 11 (Korea Bizwire) — Hyundai Motor Co. has partnered with relevant authorities to promote carbon reduction and respond to climate change through the restoration of marine ecosystems.
The carmaker said Wednesday it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and the Korea Fisheries Resources Agency to promote cooperation in the development of seaweed blue carbon.
Blue carbon refers to the carbon absorbed by marine ecosystems such as seaweed and mud flats.
Under the terms of the MOU, Hyundai, in collaboration with the two authorities, will discuss how to promote cooperation in the cultivation of sea forests.
The term “sea forest” refers to areas in coastal waters where seaweed grows densely, resembling a forest.
Hyundai will fund research on the carbon reduction effect of seaweed blue carbon and promote the development of a methodology to have it recognized as an official carbon sink by the international community.
Moreover, the company will continue to plant seaweed to create sea forests in the domestic coastal areas where marine ecosystems are severely affected by sea desertification.
