SEOUL, Jun. 9 (Korea Bizwire) — It is estimated that in 2035, two out of three households in Seoul will be composed of one or two people.
According to an infographic published by the Seoul Institute on June 8, the share of such small households in 2000 was 33.3 percent in Seoul.
The share in 2015 reached 51.7 percent and is expected to reach 63.2 percent in 20 years.
Due to a low birthrate and aging population, the share of small households with a family member over 65 in Seoul is expected to increase from 23.9 percent in 2015 to 42.7 percent in 2035.
However, the share of households with individuals under 39 will decrease from 38.2 percent in 2015 to 22.6 percent in 2035.
The share of households with individuals between 40 and 64 is expected to decrease from 38 percent in 2015 to 34.7 percent in 2035.
In 2014, 45.6 percent of small households in Seoul lived in a house or a multi-family building, while 30.1 percent and 15.4 percent lived in apartments and townhouses respectively.
