SEOUL, Jan. 21 (Korea Bizwire)An international online taekwondo championship will be launched this year, enabling people around the world to participate in it and make exchanges each other, the event’s organizer said Monday.

“We’ve decided to open the World Online Taekwondo Championships for the first time in the world this year,” Seo Hyun-seok, secretary-general of the Kimunyong Sports Committee, said. The committee is a Seoul-based organization honoring the late South Korean IOC member Kim Un-yong.

All events other than sparring — pumsae (forms), music pumsae, breaking, taekwon gymnastics and demonstrations — can be played via the Internet, the official said.

“We plan to announce the outline of the online event in April and hold preliminaries in May and finals timed with the finals of the Kimunyong Cup International Open Taekwondo Championships set for July in Seoul,” he said.

People of all ages can participate in the online event by posting their moving images taken by their smartphones, and international umpires registered in the World Taekwondo will grade them, he said.

“All the events and scoring will be relayed on a real-time basis to increase the championships’ transparency,” he added.
