JEJU, Oct. 28 (Korea Bizwire)The provincial government of Jeju Island, which is famous for strong winds, plans to launch a project that uses wind power to produce electricity and then use the electricity to split water to produce hydrogen energy.

This is an example of a so-called green hydrogen (P2G: Power to Gas) project that does not generate any carbon dioxide emissions.

On Tuesday, the provincial government unveiled the Jeju New Frontier strategy that consisted of the green hydrogen demonstration project, which aims to shift energy resources from fossil fuels to hydrogen, and a new recyclable energy technology development project.

The green hydrogen demonstration project is designed to use idle electricity produced by new renewable energy sources such as wind power generation, to split water to produce green hydrogen that can be used for airplanes, vehicles, hydrogen drones and fuel cells.

Jeju Gov. Won Hee-ryong said in a press conference that the provincial government will require that all buses on the island be either electric or hydrogen powered in accordance with a plan to suspend the registration of motor vehicles with internal combustion engines by 2030, adding that the nation’s first hydrogen bus charging station using green hydrogen will be demonstrated on the island.

The provincial government plans to seek the best optimization of the hydrogen industry by verifying the economic value of the electric vehicle charging demonstration project, implementing a safety evaluation and developing safety standards.

Furthermore, the provincial government also intends to build a hydrogen town where everyday household needs such as lighting, cooking, heating and ventilation can be met simply with hydrogen energy.

In addition, the provincial government plans to install 4.2-megawatt wind power generators by Sept. 2023, aimed at creating the nation’s largest wind power complex.
