JEJU, June 9 (Korea Bizwire) — Dol harubang, rock statues carved from hole-ridden basalt, are ubiquitous on the South Korea’s resort island of Jeju
They hold the designation of Jeju Province’s Important Folklore Cultural Heritage No. 2.
The statues undergo maintenance and cleaning every five years to prevent damage or contamination from bird excrement and moss.
In 2017 and 2018, maintenance work was carried out, and since April of last year, the Jeju Foundation for Culture Development has been locating rock statues dispersed throughout the island for cleaning purposes.
Last year, approximately 30 dol harubang statues were cleaned, and as of Thursday, an additional 44 statues have been cleaned this year.
Certified cultural heritage maintenance experts meticulously care for each statue using only distilled water and soft brushes to ensure damage-free cleaning.
