SEOUL, Nov. 29 (Korea Bizwire) – The Korean Association for Buddhist Studies is set to hold a symposium on the convergence of Buddhism and the fourth industrial revolution next month.

The academic conference will see scholars put their heads together to discuss the future of Buddhism and its relation to the latest technologies including artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and augmented reality.

Han Sung-ja, a member of the Institute of Korean History, will give a talk on the possibility of AI robots reaching nirvana, the highest spiritual state that can be achieved in the Buddhist religion.

Han argues that to reach nirvana, one must have desire and obsession, but the lack thereof makes AI robots hard to reach the spiritual state.

“Even if we taught agony to AI robots and got rid of emotion during the test process, the agony in robots and the agony in humans will be completely different in nature,” Han said.

Buddhist monk Bo Ill from Haeinsa Temple’s school is set to talk about the feasibility of adopting algorithm data of koans, also known as Zen riddles, in AI counseling robots.

In addition, a number of experts from both the field of Buddhism and IT technology including Hwang Jong-sung, a researcher at the National Information Society Agency, are expected to give presentations.
