DAEJEON, July 20 (Korea Bizwire)The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) announced on Wednesday that it has developed a humanoid robot pilot capable of understanding flight manuals written in natural language and flying an aircraft.

The robot pilot, named Pibot, can memorize all of the world’s Jeppson navigation charts and directly control an aircraft.

It responds to emergency situations faster than human pilots since it calculates safe routes in real-time based on the aircraft’s flight condition.

Pibot also comprehends the events inside and outside the aircraft through its camera, while accurately manipulating various switches in the cockpit.

Even within a highly vibrating aircraft, it can precisely control robot arms and hands.

The research team plans to test the humanoid robot’s flight control capability by actually putting it on a light aircraft for a test flight.

“Additionally, Pibot can control other vehicles such as cars, tanks, and armored vehicles,” said Shim Hyun-chul, an aerospace engineering professor at KAIST.
