SEOUL, June 7 (Korea Bizwire) – Korea has appointed its initial ‘first-degree master prosecutors’.
The three prosecutors are being referred to as ‘black belt prosecutors’ for their exceptional expertise in criminal investigations.
The policy to appoint authorized master prosecutors was first implemented in 2013 by the Prosecutor’s Office. Only the best prosecutors from 173 investigative fields are granted the first-degree title, the black belt.
The three prosecutors are Moon Chan-seok, Lee Jong-geun from Suwon, and Park Hyun-ju from Busan.
Moon, who is an expert in the field of market price manipulation, is currently a chief of the Suncheon District Prosecutor’s Office. He was also praised for his role in the 2013 establishment of a ‘fast track system’ that strengthens cooperation between office departments.
Prosecutor Lee, of the Suwon Prosecutor’s Office, is better known for indicting 31 principal suspects during the investigation of the JU pyramid scheme, which resulted in 2 trillion won in estimated damages.
Prosecutor Park, from the Busan Prosecutor’s Office, is an expert sex crime investigator with over 800 resolved cases.
“A total of 15 of 97 second-degree master prosecutors applied for the certification, and three were ultimately selected,” said an official from the Supreme Prosecutor’s Office. “The evaluation process included experience, expertise, and internal and external assessments.”
The Prosecutor’s Office also revealed that 44 new prosecutors made the second-degree (or blue belt) master prosecutors’ list this year.
“After four years of implementing the policy, we now have master prosecutors in 70 investigative fields,” he added.
