SEOUL, Jan. 26 (Korea Bizwire) — Major shipbuilder Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co. said Monday that the world’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier virtual test drive solution had received preliminary approval by Lloyd’s Register, a British quality assurance and risk management company.
Korea Shipbuilding’s solution uses a digital twin platform to build a virtual environment for a test drive to verify the functionality of dual fuel engines, fuel supply systems and electricity and control systems on an LNG carrier.
Digital twin refers to a virtual rendering of machines, equipment, and objects used in real life.
The solution slashes the cost of test driving an LNG vessel by as much as 30 percent, Korea Shipbuilding explained.
“This solution is the first of its kind to apply digital twin technology not just to a single piece of equipment, but to the entire vessel,” the company said.
