Korean Men Prefer Marriage, Women Do Not

SEOUL, Sept. 25 (Korea Bizwire) — Roughly 7 in 10 Korean men in their 30s are interested in getting married, while women are more interested in staying single.

According to the Planned Population Federation of Korea’s survey of 1,000 single men and women in their 30s, 30 percent of women did not want to get married. Only 18.8 percent of men responded likewise.

As long as they were successful or financially stable, 76.8 percent of men had the intention to get married, while 67.4 percent of women chose to stay single.

Roughly half of the men believed realistic conditions to get married were the primary reason discouraging them from getting married.

Women, on the other hand, believed that living alone was satisfying enough (25.3 percent) or blamed the culture of gender inequality for not getting married (24.7 percent).

A survey on happiness revealed that most Koreans were concerned about housing. Three quarters of the respondents failed to believe in the idea that hard work will pay off, indicating a certain perception of unfairness in society.

Overall, 28.2 percent of the respondents wanted housing support, surpassing those who called on the need to solve social inequity (18.5 percent).
