SEOUL, Mar. 13 (Korea Bizwire)South Korean telecom KT Corp. said Wednesday it will work with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) to develop a global monitoring system to help tackle climate change.

During the fourth UN Environment Assembly, held in Kenya, KT introduced its efforts to reduce air pollution in South Korea and called for members’ concerted efforts to address environmental concerns.

As part of a broader move, KT and the UN agency agreed to collaborate on building a big data platform on global environment known as the “world’s situation room.”

The system will be used to gather information on climate change and environmental degradation to help policymakers around the globe take appropriate actions for sustainable development goals.

The agreement comes as KT is exploring ways expand use of its real-time air quality monitoring system on the global stage, having signed a memorandum of understanding with UNEP in December for its application in other nations.

During the five-day assembly that runs through Friday, KT is exhibiting its open platform development, big data analysis and fine dust monitoring app to showcase its efforts to alleviate air pollution problems.

Last month, KT launched an air quality monitoring mobile app, Air Map Korea, which provides real-time information on fine-dust levels and suggests useful information for daily lives.
