Male University Grad Job Seekers Prefer Larger Companies

SEOUL, Korea, Mar 21 (Korea Bizwire) – According to a recent survey, job seekers in Korea show noticeable differences in their preferences by gender and education level in the size of companies in which they want to join. 

Korea Employment Information Service conducted the survey asking 3,000 job seekers aged from 15 to 33 on their employment status and attitude. The survey showed that 21.3 percent of male respondents said they want to join large companies, while 21.1 percent of females prefer small- or medium-sized ones. 

For male respondents, small- and medium-sized companies (16.6%), government agencies (13.4%) and self-employment (11.9%) following large companies. Women replied that they want to join government agencies (15.5%), large companies (14.5%) and foreign ones (10.8%) after small enterprises. 

By age, the age groups of 15 to 19 and 20 to 24 preferred small businesses the most with 27.5 percent and 18.1 percent respectively, while the age group of 25 to 29 which considerably has a higher rate of university grads favored large companies with 21.4 percent. 

By education level, graduates of high schools and junior colleges hoped to join small- and medium-sized companies the most with 22.7 percent and 20.8 percent respectively. However, 21.5 percent of university grads wanted their jobs in large companies. Only 13.8 percent of them wanted smaller companies. 

Among those who have secured jobs, 47.5 percent of them are now considering job change of their current jobs and salaries or income (29.3%) and development potential of the companies or themselves (11.8%) were the main reasons. The job seekers’ expected salaries were on average 2.31 million won. 

An official at a government research institute said, “We need to induce the age group of 20 to 24, which is a vulnerable social group in getting jobs, including the population with high school diplomas or lower, and male and female university grads, into the labor market by improving job conditions in small companies.”
