SEOUL, August 5 (Korea Bizwire)A map that shows what medical facilities people use according to age, gender and residence will be developed using big data.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport signed an MOU with the National Health Insurance Corporation to create a ‘Health Map’.

The agreement between the two organizations was made to solve inefficiencies in the distribution of medical resources, since most patients go to large hospitals in Seoul and other large urban areas. The National Health Insurance Corporation has made efforts over the years to understand exactly which medical facilities are being used by different demographics.

However, since the data was only analyzed by administrative districts, there were limitations to grasp the actual patterns of how people used medical facilities. Also, the lack of spatial data information specialists made it harder to establish a map that shows how patients use medical facilities.

By collaborating with the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, information related to insurance, medical transcripts, and facilities can be matched with spatial data information.

Kim Sun-tae, an official at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, explains the positive effects of spatial data information. “Spatial data information can create high value data through the convergence with many other types of information. We also plan to use our big data information on transportation and welfare systems to create new systems that can benefit many.”
