SEOUL, March 31 (Korea Bizwire) — South Korean food companies are rolling out not-so-spicy ‘mild kimchi’ products to increase their presence in the American and European markets.
Daesang Corp. recently invested 20 billion won (US$16.5 million) to set up a manufacturing plant in Los Angeles capable of producing around 2,000 tons of kimchi every year.
The plant will be producing so-called ‘mild kimchi,’ targeting the American and European markets. The mild kimchi will come in two types: one that includes salted seafood, and ‘vegan’ style kimchi that does without.
Daesang is offering various kinds of kimchi made with cabbage, kale, carrots, and beets to cater to a variety of demand.
CJ Cheiljedang Corp. also plans to expand exports as it enters H Mart, an U.S. supermarket operating some 70 stores throughout the country.
CJ Cheiljedang is also making an offensive with mild kimchi, made only with plant-based recipes without salted seafood. The company has also set up a branch office in England to begin exports to the European market.
Sempio Foods Company has released two canned kimchi products, ‘Kimchi Original’ and ‘Stir-fried Kimchi,’ for sale in the U.S. and Europe.
Instead of using fish sauce, the company used the ‘yondu’ bean-based liquid seasoning to create deep flavors while catering to the needs of vegetarians.
