SEOUL, Nov. 17 (Korea Bizwire)More than a month away from the end of the year, the Jeju government revealed that its designated supply of 4,873 electric cars subsidized by the Ministry of Environment had sold out.

According to Jeju officials, the remaining 739 were purchased after a regional notice urging the public to purchase the cars was issued. However, delays in production attributed to insufficient battery supply have meant only 1,835 vehicles have been delivered so far. The remainder are expected to be delivered by next February.

Subsidized EVs first hit Jeju’s automobile market in 2013, and sales grew exponentially, reaching 6,374 sold by last year. Add this year’s 4,873, and the total becomes 11,247. Of the 29,000 subsidized EVs nationwide, 38.8 percent are on South Korea’s largest island.

The total will increase by nearly 50 percent next year, as the Ministry of Environment is likely to subsidize 4,560 EVs reserved for Jeju in 2018.

To power the EVs, 9,996 privately owned charging stations are spread out across the island. There are also 416 charging stations and 361 rapid chargers that are currently operated by the government.

Jeju is aiming to replace all of the gas and diesel vehicles on its roads with EVs per its “Carbon Free Island, Jeju 2030” policy.
