More People Using Apps for Leisure Activities as Social Distancing Rules Lifted

SEOUL, June 15 (Korea Bizwire)More people are using apps for leisure activities such as movie-watching, outdoor dining and travel since the government scrapped most COVID-19 social distancing restrictions, data showed Tuesday.

Local market analysis firm IGA Works analyzed some 2 billion data records from 40 million mobile devices between May 2020 and May 2022, which showed that the number of movie app users jumped by 86.2 percent from March to May 2022.

The number of restaurant app users jumped by 69.2 percent over the same period.

As of May, the number of people simultaneously using apps by global streaming service Netflix and major cinema chains (CJ CGV, Lotte Cinema and Megabox) jumped by 77 to 90 percent from March.

The number of people using restaurant reservation apps “Tabling” and “Catchtable” jumped by 61.7 and 26.6 percent, respectively, between March and May.

In contrast, the number of people using food delivery apps like Baemin, Yogiyo and Coupang Eats dropped by 8.2, 17.2 and 25.2 percent, respectively, between March and May.

With the return of foreign travel, the number of people using airline and flight reservation apps jumped by 52.8 percent from December of last year to May.

The number of people using apps by theme parks (Everland, Lotte World) roughly tripled between May 2020 and May 2022.
